The Lord of the Rings is a trilogy of epic-high fantasy novels written by University of Oxford professor, J.R.R. Tolkien.

The series was meant to be a mere sequel to its previous book, The Hobbit (1937), but turned out to be much more. The series also branched out into movie, video-game, and merchandise franchises.

The series is recognized as being deep in religious, mythological, industrial, and philosophical interpretations by the author's point of view.

All three books in the main series: Fellowship of the Ring, Two Towers and Return of the King.

The plot revolves around Frodo Baggins, a Hobbit that lives in The Shire who is sent through a quest by Gandalf the White to destroy a mystical ring that gives powers to the Dark Lord Sauron (The Lord of the Rings). Frodo meets many allies and goes up against many creatures and enemies on his quest to destroy the ring.

Much of Stephen King's inspiration for The Dark Tower Series came from The Lord of the Rings, a fact that Stephen King has stated many times.
